The most rewarding event as a
personal trainer:
For me; it was before I was an official personal trainer. I was working
as a physiotherapist assistant, and my challenge was to get Mario
(a stroke patient who lost the use of his legs and spoke no English)
to walk again. I had Mario between the parallel bars to allow his
arms to assist walking; the end result was an arm hopping action with
no leg loading. Communicating with the Italian stroke client was impossible;
then it dawned on me…why not lower the parallel bars to limit
the arm hopping action (too simple I thought). So…there was
Mario between the Parallel bars once again, but still he found a way
to modify his arm hopping action to propel himself forward. Frustrated,
I jumped in between the parallel bars to limit the unwanted movements;
this strategy stopped him altogether. So, as I urged him toward me…HE
TOOK A STEP! The physiotherapist looked over from what she was doing
and said “Oh My God”, and I said “Wow”. This
was the first step he had taken in six months, and I only had him
as a client for one day. My career mission was to replicate similar
gratifications; so here I am; a personal trainer. |

Jeremy Jones and Victoria Jealous. These two amaze me with their big
mountain riding skills. They push beyond limits like no other on some
of the toughest terrain all around the world. It amazed me how something
so small can dominate over one of mother natures’ largest features.
Personal Training Experience:
One of my most rewarding experiences would have to be when a lady
came in to see me for help. She was at risk for many health problems.
When I first worked with her, she could not walk for very long or
very fast, for many reasons. She had never been in a gym before, and
as time went by she became more motivated to exercise because of the
positive effects it had on her, emotionally and physically. We went
from walking 5 minutes to a whole hour, in a 6 month period of time.
Her self-esteem was only getting better as time went by, she had less
aches and pains, lowered her risk for her health issues, and had more
energy to do the day to day things. She was so proud of herself, and
to this day she still thanks me for helping her realize how important
physical activity is for her.
I would also have to say that another training experience would have
to be with a client who I trained to help make it to the top of Kilimanjaro.
For someone who hadn't been in a gym training before like we did,
he adapted and progressed really well, and I knew he would make it
to the top. |

Most Rewarding Experience as a Personal Trainer:
There have been many, but the one I most remember is training former
Bow Valley radio personality, Jamie Hunt for her first traithlon.
We identified which traithlon she wanted to do. I set up a daily training
program for her a few months in advance and saw her a couple of times
a week for her regular personal training sessions. We did the traithlon
together and will never forget the excitment ( and nervousness) she
emitted before the race. When she crossed the finish line having done
incredibly well, she ran with tears of pure exhilaration and joy straight
into the arms of her husband, Dan. She loved the experience having
never done anything like this before in her life. Jamie continues
to lead an active and sometimes competitive lifestyle in Ontario. |
